York Merchant Adventurers' Hall & York Minster Cathedral
As we were admiring this building a local told us to go get a closer look at it so we followed his advice. This is the Merchant Adventurers' Hall.
The hall was built in 1357 by the influential people of the day.
It was a place to help the sick & poor but also for them to socialize.
It is still used by the Merchant Adventurers'
The details on the building are still evident.
We were told that it is the oldest building that was built and still used by the original organization.
We already had tickets for the York Minster this morning or we would have done a tour.
As we walked down Shambles street. Ben stopped to get a game pie and Roger got a York Egg.
Such a cute street. You can see why JK Rowling would use it as her inspiration for Diagon Alley. Harry Potter fans would love the shops that are now here. They can purchase their own wand.
We did have to pre-book tickets for the York Minster.
There have been many variations of a church on this site since the first century.
The organ has just been renovated and was able to be used on Easter Sunday.
This chapel was for those in the military.
Every 15 minutes they go to work.
I am so glad that they were able to save the organ pipes. They are beautiful.
Down into the crypt we go.
The intricate carving on this chest is amazing.
The memorials on the walls are some great works of art.
Try packing this into the car with your wardrobe in it.
I love stained glass windows.
The York Gospels is a huge book.
These books are in the underground museum. When they found some structural damage on the Cathedral they found that the Cathedral was built on a Roman fortress.
